Sugar Cookie Panoramic Egg Tutorial

I had the idea to try panoramic eggs with sugar cookies. I had time to try them today and figured I would just do a tutorial while I'm doing them.

What you need:

Egg mold
Egg cutter
Circle cutter
Flower cutter if desired
Easter colors
A few other colors if you plan to decorate with fondant as well as royal icing.

A solid sturdy sugar cookie (I used NFSC)
Royal Icing

Instructions:

Roll your sugar cookie dough out and cut into egg shapes. Lay the cookie into the egg mold. Do not cut your holes out before baking. You will need to bake the cookies longer than the normal time in order to get the centers fully baked. It is taking me about 15 minutes to get them done.

Take the cookies out of the oven and immediately cut the holes out. Only cut holes out of 1/2 the cookies. The back side will not have a hole. Let the cookies fully cool before removing from the mold. If you remove them while they are still warm, they will either crack or sink and will not retain the egg shape.

Here are the tops sitting on the bottoms creating a 3-D egg shape.

At some point, you will need to make your scenery royal icing figures and set them aside to dry. I did chicks and bunnies. (Photo to follow)

Once the cookies are fully cooled, use a thinned royal icing to coat the cookie in whatever color you want. I did my cookies in plain white. Coat the INSIDE of the back part of the cookie first. Let the royal icing dry. Then coat the outside of the cookie and let it dry. They end up getting a glazed pottery look that is really quite pretty.

After they have dried, "glue" them together with thick royal icing. Trim the seam with royal icing in the color of your choice. In this example, I've used pink trim. Trim the peep hole in the same or a different color. Pipe a royal icing base on the bottom of the egg so they are able to stand freely. At this point it can stand on its own.

While the trim dries, pipe on leaves and a flower at the top of your peep hole. Change your green from a leaf tip to a grass tip and fill the inside of your egg. Add a few flowers to the grass and a few easter eggs. At this point, you can add your royal icing Easter animal. In this example, I have a chick. I'm going to add others as I get them done. This is the first egg I completed.

You can also put the recipient's name on the back.

So, I've got this idea....

Easter is coming up and I want to do something nifty. I recently started getting into cookies as well as cakes and had the idea to do a cookie panorama. "Panorama?" you say. Made of sugar, a panorama looks like an egg and has a hole in the side where a royal icing Easter scene sits inside. Like this...

but I shall do this with cookie. I have an egg shaped mold, an egg cutter, a circle cutter, enough royal icing to drown a small animal, yada yada.

Get ready for a photo tutorial and let's all** pray this works as planned. I think it has the potential to turn out ultra cool.

** All meaning all 2 of you.

I'm back and I will try to not be so lame in the future.

I have been so freaking lazy when it comes to my blog. I think it was partly due to winter blues. I hate the winter. Spring has sprung and Bridget has her groove back. Getting my groove back did not involve bedding a much younger man though. :P

Sickness!

For those following the Haunted Mansion "cake" progress and wondering where it is...I have been SICK. 2 weeks of hacking, sniffling, sinus pressure...ick! I'm pretty sure whatever bug I got could be used as a biological weapon. I will get some final shots up in the next few days with a rundown of different ideas used. I will answer email questions today too!

Haunted Mansion Cake - Phase 6

The Graveyard & Hitchhiking Ghosts!

This completes the bottom tier.

Haunted Mansion Cake - Endless Hallway

Still have a few things to do once things have a chance to dry but you get the idea. :p I think this may be my favorite room so far!

The wallpaper is printed. I can't take credit for something that perfect.

I was pretty proud of my hallway. I was never all that great at forced perspective.

Haunted Mansion Cake - Music Room

Music Room

Eh, I'm so so on this room.

Click on the picture to see the whole thing.

I made a scale faux pas here. The chair is a "zoom in" but the music stand and marble vase are on the "floor". Oh well.

Just need the endless hallway and the graveyard to finish up the bottom tier. I'm putting the graveyard on the bottom tier as it would look silly on to the top tier even though it is the last scene of the ride.

I'm going to do some cotton candy cobwebs but I'll do those last. I will probably do that when I do the sugar crystal ball for Madame Leota...I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I'm going to do the crystal ball.

Haunted Mansion Cake - The Library

I sat around all day deciding how I wanted to do this room. Did I want to paint the books in or create it all in fondant. In the end, I went with fondant to create depth and it really worked well. I'm really happy with this room.

The picture did not turn out and I will attempt a new one with daylight shining in the window.

I wish I could create the rooms more completely but I only have so much cake. :p
